(Video) The Ugly Truth About Beauty in the Workplace
Tuesday, July 20th, 2010
Forget everything you’ve heard about beauty being only skin deep. Two recent Newsweek polls reveal that beauty may be pocket and career deep as well. Both surveys suggest dressing to impress today simply isn’t enough. Many managers evaluate the physical attractiveness of job candidates too.
The surveys reveal the following 8 ugly truths about beauty in the workplace:
1. Looks Matter at Work
Fifty-seven percent of the managers polled feel an unattractive (but qualified) applicant will experience more difficulty getting hired. Sixty-eight percent believe that once hired, looks continue to affect how managers evaluate an employee’s job performance.
2. Aesthetics Trump Education
When asked to rate nine character attributes, looks rated third below experience and confidence, but above where a candidate went to school and a sense of humor. With that said, it’s probably a good ideal to leave for last, or not include at all, that line in your Facebook bio about having a great sense of humor.
3. Resume Surgery or Cosmetic Surgery?
Fifty-nine percent of hiring managers recommend investing as much time and money doctoring your looks as you do doctoring your resume.
4. Caution Women – Being too Hot can Leave you Cold
Don’t believe that? Ask Debrahlee Lorenzana, the Queens woman who filed suit last month against Citibank, alleging the corporation fired her because she was “too hot.” Regardless of the veracity of the allegations, many professional women know all too well the importance of mastering the ability of looking attractive without being attracting. Sixty-one percent of the hiring managers Newsweek surveyed – 60 percent of whom were men – responded they feel it is beneficial for a woman to display her figure at work. Meanwhile, 47 percent of those same managers said they feel some women are at a disadvantage for being too attractive in the office. A winning case of “Damn if you do; damn if you don’t.”
5. Fat or Skinny, We Hate Hiring Fat People
Sure 75 percent of the American population is overweight – according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control – but that doesn’t stop us from discriminating against overweight people at work and in life. Newsweek reports “[2/3] of business managers said they believe some managers would hesitate before hiring a qualified job candidate who was significantly overweight”.
6. We Don’t Like Old People Either
Eighty-four percent of managers believe some bosses avoid hiring a qualified job applicant who looked much older than his or her cohorts.
7. In Certain Situations, ‘Lookism’ is OK
Sixty-four percent of hiring managers said they believe when a job calls for an employee to be the “face” of a company, hiring people based on looks is acceptable. But there was an inconsistency here. 60 percent of those same respondents said they would favor a law making it illegal to discriminate in hiring based on looks. When researched further, 46 percent of the public said they would favor a law making hiring discrimination based on appearance illegal.
8. Don’t Say FML Yet – Confidence is Imperative, Too!
You will recall that both confidence and experience ranked first and second on the list of the most important employee attributes. That said, lots of opportunities exists for the regular folks.

Fashion Proportion – Take the Quiz For a Chance to Win a $10 TJ Maxx Gift Card
Monday, April 19th, 2010
Apparently actresses Elise Neal and Taraji P. Henson not only enjoy socializing but the two seem to run in the same circles. Seen April 18, 2010, hobnobbing at the 2010 Silver Rose Gala and Auction in Beverly Hills, our social butterflies fluttered among the likes of Halle Berry, Alicia Keys and Jamie Foxx to name a few. The annual fundraiser, marking its 30th year, supports efforts that provide critical programs and services for families affected by domestic violence.
If you visit this blog regularly, you may recall last week’s story, The Art of Good Proportion, in which I used the actresses to illustrate the three variables required to solve the fashion equation (color, fit, proportion). Take a look at what each actress wore to the event. Did either, neither or both, pass the proportion variable? Give me your thoughts in the comment section below. Your comment qualifies you for a chance to win a $10 TJ Maxx Gift Card. Winner will be announced on this blog Friday, April 21, 2010 and notified no later than Monday April 24, 2010.
Evaluate Alicia Keys for an additional entry.

The Limited Teams Up With Jodi Arnolds
Friday, March 19th, 2010
-
Earlier this week, my daughter’s good friend Faye asked if I would take part in a fashion show at Somerset Mall, sponsored by The Limited women’s clothing store. The Limited recently teamed up with designer Jodi Arnolds and is carrying a beautiful collection that you must see. I literally laughed hysterically for a good three minutes. Yours truly, model in a fashion show? Hilarious! After regaining my composure, I agreed.
The following day, I met Faye at her store to get a glimpse of the various outfits. I knew right away that none of the clothes hanging from the rolling rack would fit my petite, triangle shape. Also, practically everything in the collection was black or of a cool hue and would look dreadful on my warm skin tone and honey, dreadful is the last thing I need. After several “Nope, I’m not feeling this” and “Oh NOOO” and “Gurl, I’m not lovin’ this at all” comments, I asked Faye if we could try something neutral with a pop of color. “What about some bright greens or corals?” I inquired. Faye said that they had a bright green trench coat that I could pair with a beige pencil skirt, but putting this triangular body in a pencil skirt is about the biggest fashion faux paus one could make. Hey, what can I tell you, I have issues.
That’s when I saw a darling strapless, sweetheart neckline dress, with ruching in the bust – perfect for my itty bitties – and extra cute slanted side pockets with really interesting brush gold and silver stud detailing on them. We paired the dress with the green trench coat worn open, a few key accessories, a pair of dope Kenneth Cole shoes and viola! I looked modernly sophisticated and was ready to rock the runway. Truth is all the models did. Agree?
Here’s a look at what I wore.

Blue Hue Hue – Oscars Fashions and Trending Colors
Monday, March 8th, 2010
In my last blog posting, I forecast that, although hues of blue would be a strong contender, coral would dominate the 2010 Oscars red carpet. Well, blue hue hue. Today, as I eat this hefty dose of humble pie, all I can say is “shame on you bluzy”. With the name Indigo, you’d think I’d jump all over an opportunity to promote blue. Oh well, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; even the experts get it wrong. *Crunch, crunch, crunch*
The Blue Hue Family
Oscar winner Mo’Nique, wore a cobalt blue Tadashi gown that draped and hugged in all the right places. To pay homage to Hattie McDaniel, the first African-American actress to win an Academy Award, Mo’Nique wore a white gardenia in her hair.
Gabourey Sidibe donned a blue, short-sleeved, Marchesa gown, decorated with diamond flowers. Great fit; not the best color. Nevertheless, it won’t be what she wore, but instead, Sidibe’s commentary about what she wore, i.e. “If fashion was porn, this dress is the money shot”, that will leave its mark and certainly go down in history as one of the red carpet’s most memorable quotes.
Actress and Oscar presenter Kristen Stewart exercised her fashionista muscle in a Monique Lhuillier, midnight blue, belted mermaid gown.
Oprah too chose blue, wearing a stunning Carolina Herrera midnight blue faille and double organza gown.
Sidebar: Did you know that Oprah is auctioning off a ton of her clothes on eBay from now through March 11th?
Even Robert Downey, Jr. threw us some shade, accessorizing his Lanvin tux with a teal bowtie and donning a pair of Oliver Peoples Sheldrake, custom blue tinted lens glasses
Other Popular Hues
Love this gorgeous bordeaux, satin pleated draped Donna Karan Couture gown worn by the lovely Penelope Cruz. Check out the asymmetrical strapless neckline. Awesome feature for a woman who has undergone a mastectomy.
I was completely enamored with Dana Owens aka Queen Latifah’s look. Dana wore the perfect figure flattering mauve, one-shoulder Badgely Mischka gown. Always seen sporting flawless hair and makeup to match, Dana continues to lead the “awesomeness” pack on the red carpet.
Finally, we come to my favorite look of the evening. When Demi Moore walked on stage, I lost my breath! Okay, Ms. Zoe, you worked this one out and I am not mad at you for digging into the archives either.
Fashion critics agree that Demi looked incredible. But, agreeing on the hue of this stunning Atelier Versace, strapless gown, seen first on the 2008 runways . . . well, let’s just say that’s a horse of a different color. I’ve seen blush and nude used on occasions, to describe the hue of the beautifully tiered frock. What color am I calling it? Why none other than coral, of course.
