Low Contrast Level

Cate Blanchard lends the perfect example of low contrast.

Her hair and skin values, along with the value of her eyes are consistent.

Now that you’re filled with all this good knowledge on color contrast, view Oscar De La Renta’s 2011 Spring Fashion Runway Show with a new set of eyes.

(Video) A Look at Color as it Relates to Contrast – High Contrast

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

High Contrast

Wearing colors that are in sync with your natural color scheme play a significant role in your overall look. But don’t be fool. There’s more to the color equation. Identifying the level of contrast that exists in the colors of your own body and then repeating that level of contrast in what you wear is the little secret many color consultants fail to mention.

How to identify your contrast level

•  Take a self-photo and convert it to black and white.

•  Determine if your hair value is dark, medium or light.

•  Determine if your skin value is dark, medium or light.

Take a look at this picture of Sophie Ellis-Bextor. The high contrast between her hair and skin is easily recognizable.

Converting this same picture to black and white, notice how her dark colors appear very dark and her light colors appear very light.

Now, look at supermodel Alek Wek. Do you think her contrast level is high, medium or low?

Alek, too, has a high contrast level. Notice how the whites of her eyes and teeth contrast highly with her dark skin.

Alek’s high contrast is even more prevalent in this picture, as here we see not only how the whites of her eyes contrast with her dark skin, but also the contrast of the reflected light on her face.

Both look fabulous in high contrast color-combinations. Another winning look is wearing colors that contrast strongly against their hair

or skin

Now, take a look at this video. Note how all the models have dark hair; not one blond. Medium Contrast

Malia and Sasha – Poor Little Rich Girls Must Hand Over the Jewels

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Malia and Sasha Obama living life as most of us don't know it. (Image DWS Celebrity News)

Dang, what good is it to be daughters of a world leader when you can’t reap the benefits? First daughters Malia and Sasha recently had to turn over gifts from Saudi Arabia – two diamond necklace and earring sets – worth $7,275. Why? Because our good ole U.S. Constitution has a clause within it banding federal officials, or their family members, from accepting foreign gifts.

But apparently, Malia and Sasha are used to this. Since President Obama took office, they’ve had to turn over:

- Two 15-piece nesting dolls from Russia. Worth: $500.
- Four scarves, one teddy bear, and one jewelry box from South Korea. Worth: $570.
- Four dresses and two Isabel Garreton jackets. Worth: $815
- Four books and 17 DVDs from Australia. Worth: $470

So what happens to the gifts? Well, they’re carted off to the National Archives. But wait, get this. Once President Daddy leaves office, the girls, or should I say mommy or daddy, can “buy” back the gifts. Did that feel as criminal to you reading as it felt typing? Geez, the government is a bona fide racketeer.

I can’t help but wonder if the gift givers know about this policy? If they didn’t before, they probably do now.

Oh well . . .

WAIT!  Does this mean First Lady Obama is borrowing or buying all of her fancy frocks and things?

(Video) ColourGurl Fashion Confessions – Why I Never Played With Barbie Dolls

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

Confession Number One

My very first best friend was a 2’5” walking doll named Naomi. She had sandy brown hair, styled in a sixties bob, beautiful medium brown sleep eyes, long lashes and chocolate mocha plastic skin. She wore a pink gingham plaid frock, identical to a dress I owned, with white ruffled ankle socks and black shoes. For years, we were BFFs, gurls, ace boons. But apparently, Naomi thought there was more to life than simply being a doll.

I Kid You Not!

One night I woke up to find Naomi standing in front of my closet, lit up from head to toe, eyes batting, body leaned forward as if about to take a step. I went into instant hysteria, screaming at the top of my lungs. Of course, by the time my Dad ran to my aid Naomi had resumed to her doll-like state. Dad never believed me and had it not been the sixties, I’m sure he would have toted me off to the nearest shrink. But back then, black folks didn’t believe in professional intervention. Nevertheless, at my request, Dad dismantled Naomi’s movable parts, removed her from my room and placed her into the dumpster, promising never to buy me a doll again.

Barbie of the 60s

Confession Number Two

I’ve never owned a Barbie doll. Part of the reason stemmed from the Naomi incident. But the primary reason had to do with there being no black Barbie dolls in the sixties. Raised by a father, whose Saturday morning ritual included the sound of vinyl hissing and popping, and James Brown’s blaring voice commanding us to “Say it Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud”, owning a blue-eyed, blond, brunette or redhead, white doll, was not an option.

Obviously much has taken place in the world of Barbie over the last 50 years, including the inclusion of Black Barbie 30 years ago. In 2008, Vogue celebrated Barbie’s golden anniversary, by creating this stunning “Dad” approved Black Barbie issue. Without question, we’ve come a long way. Still, as I peruse each of the 142 staggeringly beautiful images in that 2008 Black Barbie issue, and the many intricate details, I’m even more convinced that when the rest of us sleep, dolls lead a secret life.
